BHG magazine - breast feeding in toilet

“Lifestyle” magazine Better Homes and Gardens seem to have really got themselves in the pooh lately with a recent article boldly proclaiming that while dinning out  “THOU SHALT NOT BREAST FEED AT THE TABLE” but rather moms, needing to feed their precious little ones, should “TAKE IT TO THE LADIES ROOM.”

Not surprisingly the doodoos seem to have have really hit the fan with a strong public backlash to BHG’s commanding article.  And well, as firm advocates for breastfeeding, such advice from a leading magazine has got us at HOTmilk wondering which century BHG are living in!  Let us know what you think or better yet, log on to the BHG facebook page and tell them directly what you think.

Ps. BHG have since recognized the error of judgment made on their part and have issued an official apology on their own blog -  as well as doing so directly on our own HOTmilk blog!  View the comments on this posting to read.

  1. Hi there,

We understand the concerns about this blog post and we are sorry it was published. You are absolutely right–this was inappropriate and we have issued an apology: http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/food/the-9-commandments-of-dining-with-little-kids-1466320/.

  2. Thanks Joanna for both the apology and the amendment to the article. ( Phew!) And good on BHG for being big enough to admit their error and strive to make good. It’s a relief to have common sense prevail and bring breastfeeding back into the 21st century! Thanks.

  3. As a mom to 5 ages 11 to infant, i often have to breastffeed at a table while eating if I want to even get a chance to eat that day and if I want to supervise my children eating and enjoy that special family time with them. For me to have to go off to a bathroom is first of all not practical. I’d be leaving a bunch of little children without a watchful eye. Also, most bathrooms in restaurants don’t have a lounge type area in them so what…sit on the toilet to feed a baby? Another thing, would you like to carry your meal into that bathroom to eat? How about just spend time hanging out in there? Even clean bathrooms are germy places. TO expect someone to eat or hang out in a place where someone next to you is going to the bathroom…ewwww.

I notice an apology was issued which is great but I just wonder how this ever slipped through the editing process in the first place. Very sad
